Step into a Winter Wonderland!

I love an illuminated trail and was excited to go to what is now an annual tradition to the Illuminated Garden Trail at Helmingham Hall, Suffolk.

Nobody does festive lights better than the spectacular Grade I listed gardens at Helmingham Hall, you can read my blog post about last year here.

This year I took my family along to experience the magical winter wonderland, which had been transformed with thousands of new lights for 2024! The enchanted light trail is the perfect way to kick off the festive season.

I've been to this event for a few years now, but every year it is something different to look at. This year there was a few new surprises. One of which was the introduction of a vintage carousel, one of my favourite things! Me and the children loved having a ride on the painted horses. It was great to see the large-scale outdoor sculptures by David Harber incorporated into the trail. I wrote about the introduction of these to Helmingham Hall for Suffolk Magazine. Another new introduction was a stunning huge moon to admire. One of the highlights of the trail.

Running from 15th November – 18th December 2024, this event has just been named in the top 19 Christmas Light Trails for 2024 by The Times. Not surprising when you stroll through the beautiful gardens of the historic estate. While the trail has some steps, an alternate route is available for wheelchair users. Assistance can be arranged by calling 01473 890799 or emailing events@helmingham.com.

Cross the famous drawbridge (pulled up every night since 1510!) and warm up with complimentary mulled wine in the historic courtyard. Stroll through the illuminated gardens, toast marshmallows for s’mores by the fire pits, and browse the Stable Shops for festive gifts and treats.

The estate recommends wearing warm clothing and sturdy footwear as the paths can be uneven and slippery. Some areas of the trail may be dark so it is recommended to bring a torch with you.

Will there be refreshments?

Wrights Cafe on the site will reopen for the event offering their usual menu of posh cheese toasties alongside special festive treats.

Other hot drinks and snacks, including s'mores kits, will be available and there will also be complimentary mulled wine on offer.
